Admn cautions villagers as Yamuna in spate

CHANDIGARH: In view of the rising water level in the Yamuna river due to untimely rain in the hilly areas, the Karnal district administration has advised the people of adjoining areas not to cross the Yamuna so as to avert danger.

Chandigarh, March 3

In view of the rising water level in the Yamuna river due to untimely rain in the hilly areas, the Karnal district administration has advised the people of adjoining areas not to cross the Yamuna so as to avert danger. They have also been advised to avoid taking their cattle to the fields on the other side of the river.

While giving this information today, an official spokesman said the district development and panchayat officer, all block development and panchayat officers, officers of Irrigation Department and sarpanches has been asked to make people aware about the rise in water level so as to avoid any possible danger to life and property.

He said the water level of Hathnikund Barrage which was 56,000 cusecs on Monday morning had reached 87,000 cusecs at night; the water level receded to nearly 56,000 cusecs today.

He said water from Hathnikund Barrage would enter Karnal later in the afternoon or tonight, therefore, the villagers have been advised not to venture out.
