Sangrur, June 8

Hundreds of persons today took out a march through the main bazaars of Sangrur city in protest against the failure of the police to nab the “killers” of Hardeep Kaur, BBA student of a college at Mastuana Sahib (near Sangrur) and resident of Balial village near Dirba.

The body of Hardeep Kaur was found from a canal near Kamalpur village near Dirba on May 5. The Dirba police initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC in this case.

However, later at the bhog ceremony of the deceased an action committee was formed under the leadership of district secretary of the CPM Bhup Chand Channo when it reportedly appeared that the girl had been killed as there were injury marks on her body.

The action committee met the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sangrur, to trace and nab the killers of the victim.

However, when the action committee saw no progress in the case, it took out a protest march from Banasar Bagh to Mahavir Chowk here and blocked roads there leading to Ludhiana, Delhi, and Barnala for about two hours. People faced a lot of inconvenience due to the blockade.

Channo said the accused had thrown the body of Hardeep Kaur into the canal after murdering her. There were several injury marks on the body of the deceased. After the postmortem the police had assured that the culprits would be nabbed soon but nothing had been done so far.

He said they met the SSP and staged a dharna in front of the Dirba police station, but to no avail.

Station House Officer (SHO), Dirba, Vijay Kumar said a special investigation team (SIT), comprising the DSP (D), DSP, Dirba, in charge, CIA and the Dirba SHO, had been formed by the SSP to investigate the case thoroughly.

He said despite being called by the police time and again, no one, including father of the deceased girl, had come to the police station to get the case registered. He said earlier proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC had been initiated with the consent of the father of the deceased.
