Dehradun, April 17

The Central government has directed the state government to complete construction of STPs between Gomukh and Haridwar and also tapping of nullahs under the Ganga Namami project by December.

The Uttarakhand government officials, who returned after a meeting with Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi, were specifically asked to pull up their socks so that the sanctioned projects could be completed by early December.

Significantly, during his visit in January this year, Nitin Gadkari had expressed concern at the steady flow of waste by the nullahs into the river Ganga despite the efforts to stop their flow. There are around 135 nullahs that have been earmarked and out of which only 70 have been tapped, while the work is still in progress on the remaining nullahs.

Similarly, around 30 new STPs have to be constructed between Gomukh to Haridwar and between Badrinath to Haridwar and the six existing ones are in line for upgradation. The work on upgradation of STPs is in the final stages, while on few new STPs the tenders are yet to be floated.
