CU team bags top spot in vehicle challenge

MOHALI: The nine-member team Fateh of Chandigarh University bagged the top spot in the overall category of the Human Powered Vehicle Challenge-2016, organised by the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) at VIT University, Vellore.

The nine-member team Fateh of Chandigarh University bagged the top spot in the overall category of the Human Powered Vehicle Challenge-2016, organised by the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) at VIT University, Vellore.

The specialty of the vehicle designed by the team was that it provided the best riding posture to the driver, which increased the overall performance of the vehicle and it could attain the top speed of 50 kmph with an option of adjustable seat and steering in accordance to the height of the driver.

The winning team was also adjudged first in India in the best design category. By bagging 86.32 points in the competition, the team broke the national record earlier held by Delhi Technical University (DTU), claimed the university management. The team was awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000 in the overall category and Rs 15,000 in the best design category by ASME.

Nearly 50 teams from various universities and institutes, including the IIT, Rourkela, IIT, Patna, NIT Jamshedpur, NIT, Patna, SRM University, ISM, Dhanbad, Jamia Islamia University, MIT, Manipal and Punjabi University participated in the competition.

Elated over the performance, team captain Nikhil, a student of mechanical engineering (sixth semester), said, “We were inspired by the legendary scientist and former Indian President, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, and dedicate our project to his idea making India a global leader in science and technology.”

The other members of the team were Nitin, Nishant Kapoor, Nikhilpreet Singh, Narinder Singh, Akshay Soni, Bitu Yadav, Aseem Gupta and Harsimran Kaur.
