Director General, Forests, Dr SS Negi today stressed the need for developing libraries for better research works in the country.

Negi while addressing the valedictory session of the 10th Uttarakhand Science Congress at Vigyan Dham, Jhajara, Dehradun, said for better research and development activities, one had to first develop libraries for children. The availability of research documents must be ensured at libraries.

He lauded the newly set up Regional Science Centre at Vigyan Dham and advocated for maximum exploitation of the facility by people, particularly young scientists.

Kumaon University Vice-Chancellor HS Dhami said to be in the league of best universities, an institute had to be enriched qualitatively. Prof PK Garg, Vice-Chancellor, Uttarakhand Technical University, motivated young researchers to contribute prolifically to research and development activities.

Dr Anil Kumar Gupta, Director of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, said research and development activities should be encouraged in higher education for the development of a progressive economy. Chief Minister’s financial adviser Indu Kumar Pandey said traditional knowledge should be propagated in modern times.

Earlier, Dr Rajendra Dobhal, Director General of Uttarakhand Council of Science and Technology (UCOST), presented suggestions of experts.

He said 490 papers, presented during 17 technical sessions, were evaluated by subject experts from outside the state. “Among them, 50 budding scientists, including 22 women, were given the Young Scientist Award,” he said.

GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology bagged 14 awards, followed by six by HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar and four by Kumaon University.

Former Vice-Chancellor of HNB Garhwal University Prof SP Singh was also felicitated with the Technology Excellence Award by the UCOST. Somjeet Mandal from Graphic Era University was honoured with the Innovator of the year-2016 title.

Prof SJ Chopra, Vice-Chancellor of Uttarakand Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), presented a vote of thanks.
