A city court today sentenced Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh GK and eight other SAD leaders to till rising court (TRC) for protesting without police permission against the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The court convicted all nine accused by asking them to stay in the court till it’s rising after leaders admitted that they had protested at Rajpath violating provision of Section 144 of the CrPC.

Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria in its two-page order said: “Considering the overall facts and circumstances of the case, accused Swaran Jeet Singh, Sumerdeep Singh, Paramjeet Singh Rana, Tanwant Singh, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Kuldeep Singh Bhogal, Manjit Singh, IS Monty, Jaspreet Singh alias Vicky Maan are sentenced to TRC.”

The court said the accused submitted that they voluntarily wanted to plead guilty. They had been explained about the consequences of pleading guilty, but they insisted on it. They were thus convicted for the offence under Section 188 of the IPC, the order said.

It said the accused had stated that since they were protesting for a noble cause, they had no hesitation even in going to jail.
