Election to Zila Parishad chief, vice-chief postponed

Chandigarh, March 6

The election to the post of chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Fatehabad Zila Parishad (ZP) scheduled for today was put off, as members did not turn up for a meeting called for the purpose.

Fatehabad Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) JK Abhir waited for them for an hour. When not a single out of 18 ZP members turned up, he announced adjournment of the elections. “The next date of the meeting will be intimated to the members soon,” the ADC said.

Among the newly elected members, Anil Gorchhia, Kamla Rani, Surjit Odh, Jagdish Odh and Gita Rani are from the BJP.

Fatehabad being the home district of state BJP chief Subhash Barala, the ruling party toiled hard to muster support for its members.

However, nine other members — Mandeep Kaur Gill, Vijender Siwach, Ajay Mehta, Baljit Kaur, Sushila Sihag, Ram Dass Tibbi, Avtar Singh, Ram Chander and Bibo Indora — teamed against the BJP and declared that the ruling party could name any one of them as a candidate for the chairperson.

Later, Rajesh Kaswan and his wife, Sunita, joined them making their strength to 11 — still one short of 12 needed to complete the quorum for the meeting.

Harvard University alumna Yukti Chaudhary and Satpal Sharma kept distance from BJP members as well as the group of 11 members.

Since none of the group was in a position to muster support for its candidates, none attended the meeting.

Ambala: The election of the chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Ambala Zila Parishad (ZP) was postponed, as none of the newly elected members reached Additional Deputy Commissioner Monika Malik’s office, where polls were to be held today.

There are 15 members in the House, out of which the BJP has six and the INLD 4. The Congress has two members, while the BSP has one. Two of the members are not affiliated to any party.

The ADC waited for the members till noon. When none of them turned up, she announced postponement of the election. No new date of the election was announced.

Yamunanagar: The election to the posts of Zila Parishad chairperson and vice- chairperson was postponed today, as no member attended the meeting scheduled for the purpose.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Shalin said the next date for the meeting would be announced after discussing the matter with Deputy Commissioner SS Phulia.

In Kaithal, no contest for top posts

Kaithal: The chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Kaithal Zila Parishad were elected unopposed today.

Sukhvinder Kaur of Andhli village was elected chairperson, while Munish Kumar of Kathwar village was made the vice-chairperson.

Yamunanagar MLA Ghanshyam Dass Arora and Guhla MLA Kulwant Bajigar told the media the chairperson, her deputy and all Zila Parishad members had expressed their faith in the BJP leadership.
