Gender test racket busted; seven arrested

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Police have busted a gang which used to take women from Kurukshetra and nearby districts to Uttar Pradesh (UP) for getting the sex-determination tests done.

The Haryana Police have busted a gang which used to take women from Kurukshetra and nearby districts to Uttar Pradesh (UP) for getting the sex-determination tests done. Seven persons, including three members of the gang, two women who opted for sex determination and their husbands, have been arrested.

Stating this here today, a spokesman of the Police Department said that the accused had been identified as Kewal Kishore, a resident of Daya Nagar in Karnal district, Yogesh, a resident of UP, car driver Anil, a resident of Rohtak, women Suman and Mukesh, residents of Kharak Pandwa, and their husbands Rishipal and Satish.

The police received information that some persons were coming to Kurukshetra in a car and on a motorcycle after getting sex determination tests done in UP. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, the police, along with a team of the Health Department, laid a naka near Ladwa and arrested the accused.

During interrogation, Kewal Kishore said that he, along with Yogesh, used to take patients from Kurukshetra and nearby districts to a doctor in Saharanpur, UP, for conducting sex determination tests. The police recovered eight Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) kits from Kewal Kishore, two kits from Yogesh and impounded the car and the motorcycle.

A case has been registered against the accused under Section 420 and 120B and various sections of the MTP Act and Pre-conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act at the Ladwa police station. Other members of the gang would also be arrested, he added.
