Heavy rain lashes city, Met forecasts more showers

CHANDIGARH: Heavy rain on Saturday morning brought much-needed respite from the hot and humid conditions prevailing in the city over the last few days.

Heavy rain on Saturday morning brought much-needed respite from the hot and humid conditions prevailing in the city over the last few days. The maximum temperature recorded a dip of six degrees at 30.5°Celsius, while the minimum temperature too plunged by 3 degrees at 23.6°C Celsius.

According to the Meteorological Department, during the last 48 hours, Chandigarh has recorded a whopping 62.2 mm of rainfall.

“The city will witness more rain accompanied by lightning and thundershowers in the coming two days and temperatures will continue to hover around the same mark,” said an official of the Meteorological  Department. 

A thunderstorm accompanied by squall with wind speed exceeding 45 kmph is likely to occur in some parts of the city during the next 48 hours.

The humidity index, too, has continued to be constant at 70 to 80 per cent for the past three days and is expected to remain unwavering over the coming 48 hours.

Meanwhile, sporadic cases of minor traffic congestion and waterlogging were reported here this morning from some parts of the city.

Notably, the weathermen have predicted that the city is expected to get adequate rain in July and August. Between June to September this year, an average rainfall of around 840 mm to 900 mm is expected in the city.    

City waterlogged

Chandigarh: The morning rain led to waterlogging in different parts of the city. According to information available, the underpass connecting Sector 15 and 11 and the underpass in the Industrial Area, Phase I, was also waterlogged. 

Low-lying areas inundated in P’kula

Panchkula: Local residents were a hassled lot on Saturday as several sectors of Panchkula witnessed waterlogging due to rain. Low-lying areas like Sectors 19, 14, 15, 16 and Rajiv Colony witnessed a major problem as water accumulated in the residential areas and remained there for around four to five hours. 

Parts of Mohali submerged

Mohali: Commuters faced a tough time in Phase VIII, Industrial Area, and some other parts of the city due to waterlogging after heavy rain on Saturday morning. Some of the roads in the Industrial Area, Sector 70, Phases X and XII were submerged. 

Roads flooded in Zirakpur

Zirakpur: Residents of Zirakpur and nearby villages were left fuming with the town’s drainage system thoroughly overwhelmed by showers on Saturday morning. The situation turned from bad to worse as most roads in the town were flooded with rainwater.
