Leads women’s team in the World Baseball Cup at South Korea

LUDHIANA: Amanjot Kaur Bains, captain of the Indian women’s baseball contingent that took part in the World Baseball Cup at Gijang in South Korea from September 3 to 11, termed the participation in the tournament a much-needed exposure.

Amanjot Kaur Bains, captain of the Indian women’s baseball contingent that took part in the World Baseball Cup at Gijang in South Korea from September 3 to 11, termed the participation in the tournament a much-needed exposure.

Amanjot, a student of MA history at Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, Ludhiana, along with other three players from Punjab represented the nation in the tournament. In total, 12 teams, including the US, Japan, Canada, South Korea and Pakistan, participated in the event.

India scripted a 19-2 win over arch rivals Pakistan and waged a spirited battle against all other opponents before going down narrowly in the tournament.

It was after a gap of eight years that Indian eves qualified for the event. Earlier, the women’s team competed in the 2008 World Cup in Japan.

Sharing her experience, Amanjot said though they could not earn a position in the major tournament, the girls learnt a lot, which would help them in future competitions.

An ace player, Amanjot, has been the captain of the Punjab baseball team twice at the Senior National Baseball Championship and won gold for three consecutive years during the championship in Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka in 2014, 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Principal of Guru Nanak Girls College Dr Charanjit Kaur Mahal and Physics Department head Rajwinder Kaur appreciated Amanjot for bringing fame to her alma mater.
