SKIMS paediatric dept conducts 74 laparoscopic surgeries

Surgical services in Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, have taken a big leap with the development of laparoscopic surgery in children by the Department of Paediatric and Neonatal Surgery during past one year.

Surgical services in Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, have taken a big leap with the development of laparoscopic surgery in children by the Department of Paediatric and Neonatal Surgery during past one year.

As many as 74 successful surgeries, including a two-month-old baby, have been conducted successfully.

Assistant Professor, paediatric surgery, Dr Gowhar Nazir Mufti said for the past one year over 100 laparoscopic operations were performed in the Department of Paediatric Surgery for children of age groups between two months and 16 years. The smallest baby operated weighed 4 kg.

Director, SKIMS, Dr SA Zargar said laparoscopic surgery was the gold standard of treatment for numerous surgical conditions. “These surgeries have been successfully performed in SKIMS by the Department of General Surgery for the past more than 10 years and now surgical services has been taken to new heights at SKIMS with the introduction of laparoscopy in paediatric surgery and so many successful procedures have been conducted by medical experts at SKIMS for the past one year,” he added.

He appreciated young medicos for their endeavour and brining dynamism with new medical advances.

The faculty of the paediatric surgery, SKIMS, headed by Prof Dr Khursheed Shiekh appreciated the Director for his support who put in place all required equipment and other logistic support. He also thanked Dr A Qayoom Dar and Dr Khairat M Bhat, professors of paediatric anaesthesia and the supportive staff for their cooperation.
