Police tighten noose around traffic violators in Srinagar

Tightening the noose around violators, the city traffic police seized 3,000 motorcycles in the past four days.

The drive, which was started four days ago in the summer capital of the state, is scheduled to continue against the violators, senior officials of the Traffic Department said, “This drive is against people who violate rules like rash driving or drive without licence or helmets. This will continue till everyone doesn’t follow the rules,” said Superintendent of Traffic Police, city, Maqsood-ul-Zaman.

In the past many years, several youth in parts of Kashmir have lost their lives while performing stunts. The officials said the youth who drive without helmets would be strictly dealt with.

“We have seized 3,000 two-wheelers in the past four days. We have observed a difference that people do not have any other option, but to follow rules. This is for the welfare of people. We have also seized scooties of girls who were driving without crash helmets,” the officials said.

As part of its drive, the department has found a novel way by directing petrol pump owners to deny fuel to motorcyclists not wearing crash helmets.

“Our aim is to save precious lives. We have also been requesting people through media and other sources to abide by the traffic rules,” the official said.

People have appreciated the department’s move as scores of teenagers riding two-wheelers without crash helmets lose their lives every year. “This is a good step as the youth get involved in stunt biking on Boulevard Road and there is a need to stop this dangerous trend. This drive should continue,” said a local, Bashir Ahmad.

The Traffic Department has also appealed to the owners of the filling stations to bring the violators to the notice of nearest police post.

“For speedy action, the owners of filling stations or anyone who witnesses traffic rules violations can reach us at these phone numbers: 9419000851, 0194-2450022, 0194-2455164,” the official said.
