Polythene ban: List of officials authorised to issue challans released

CHANDIGARH: The Environment Department, Chandigarh, has issued a list of officials empowered to impose Rs 5,000 fine on people violating polythene ban.

The Environment Department, Chandigarh, has issued a list of officials empowered to impose Rs 5,000 fine on people violating polythene ban. The officials, authorised to issue challans are DC, SDMs of respective jurisdictions, director, environment, MC Joint Commissioner, inspectors of Medical Officer Health (MOH), Food and Supply Department and officials designated by the UT Administration. These officials will impose fine of Rs 5000 on violators.

The list was issued in a meeting held today under the chairmanship of director, environment, Santosh Kumar, which was also attended by member secretary, CPCC, Danish Ashraf and all SDMs.

The money collected through fine will be deposited in a separate account which will be maintained by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC). This fund will be used for spreading environmental awareness among public.

In the meeting, it was also resolved that the manufactures/suppliers of coloured/non-coloured non-woven plastic bags have to submit a valid

license/certificate from Central Pollution Control Board or Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) or any other Government approved

laboratories which clearly indicates bio-degradability of their product.
