The Punjab Human Rights Organisation (PHRO), an NGO, has approached Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and DGP Suresh Arora, claiming that former Akali MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha is a proclaimed offender (PO) in a 1983 murder case.

The organisation alleged that Valtoha was named along with Hardev Singh and Baldev Singh in an FIR registered in connection with the killing of Dr Sudarshan Kumar Trehan. Hardev and Baldev were arrested and later acquitted by the court, while Valtoha was declared a PO, the rights body said.

The PHRO, headed by Justice Ajit Singh Bains (retd) has demanded a judicial probe into the matter and the immediate arrest of Valtoha.

Tarn Taran SSP Harjit Singh said it was not possible to trace the record of such an old case. Valtoha clarified that he had faced trial in the case and was later acquitted by the court. He claimed that the police had not updated their record.
