Amritsar, February 10

Restrictions have been imposed on dhadis (who sing tales of valour) performing at Akal Takht after one of them antagonised Akali  leader Sucha Singh Langah at an event on February 8.

A furious Langah reportedly snatched the microphone from Dhadi Satnam Singh Laalu Ghuman as he slammed the Akalis for being "selfish", reminding them of the "selfless" services rendered by their predecessor Akali Phula Singh.

Witnesses said devotees gathered there objected to Langah’s behaviour. But for the intervention of some SGPC officials, the situation could have turned ugly, they claimed. Langah reportedly demanded that the dhadis be "reined in" and stopped from using the Akal Takht platform for "defaming" the Akalis.

Denying that action had been initiated against Dhadi Satnam Singh, Golden Temple manager Sulakhan Singh said only time had been fixed for the dhadi jathas, between

9 am and 2 pm. “Dhadis often get swayed while singing vaars (valour tales), little realising that they may send out a negative message. It has been decided that henceforth a member of the SGPC’s Dharam Parchar Committee will conduct the stage”, he said.

Calling the move "totally unjustified", SGPC executive member Karnail Singh Panjoli  has appealed to the Akal Takht Jathedar to summon Langah, a former Cabinet Minister, for violating the Akal Takht sanctity.

“If Langah had any complaint against Dhadi Satnam Singh, he should have brought it to the notice of Akal Takht," Panjoli said. Dhadi Sabha chief Baldev Singh, criticising the SGPC move, has termed it an "undue restriction" on a tradition linked to the Sikh religion. Langah could not be reached on phone.
