Soon, insurance cover for MC sewermen, power dept staff

The Municipal Corporation (MC) is soon going to introduce policy for insurance cover to the operational staff of its electricity wing and sewermen.

Giving details, Mayor Poonam Sharma said she had discussed the matter with the higher authorities in the Chandigarh Administration, who had agreed that there was a requirement for an insurance policy as per the notification regarding insurance cover to the operational staff of fire and emergency services of the civic body.

She said an agenda regarding the insurance policy for electricity staff and MC sewermen, on the pattern of the insurance cover given to the staff of fire and emergency services, would be brought in the next Finance & Contract Committee (F&CC) meeting.

The Mayor said the insurance policy notified by the UT for the operational staff of fire and emergency services of the MC provided insurance cover in case of death and other disabilities.

In case of death, the MC provides Rs 20 lakh; Rs 10 lakh is provided for disability of 75 per cent to 100 per cent; Rs 7.5 lakh for disability of 50 per cent to 75 per cent; and Rs 5 lakh for disability of 20 per cent to 50 per cent.

Poonam Sharma said all regular operational staff of the Fire and Emergency Services had been covered under the insurance policy. The premium of the policy would be borne by the MC, the Mayor said.
