Gurugram, July 10

The Mewat police nabbed one of its most wanted criminals, Mushtaq, late on Wednesday night from near the Bangladesh border while he was trying to flee from the area.

A resident of Badly village in Punhana, Mushtaq made it to the top of the state’s notoriety list in June when he shot two cops who had gone to arrest him for jumping parole of the Bikaner jail where he was lodged for allegedly gunning down a Gurugram cop.

The state government had declared a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his arrest, making him one of most “pricey” criminals of the state.

According to the Mewat police, they first managed to nab his brothers, also his gang members, and then his wife whom he had “bought” for Rs 2.5 lakh from Rajasthan and married. Then they nabbed Mushtaq, waiting to escape on a deserted station near the Bangladesh border.

“He had first shot a Gurugram cop. He also shot two cops who battled for life for several days. He is a proclaimed offender wanted for heinous crimes in Haryana, Rajasthan and Maharashtra,” said SP Mewat Naazneen Bhasin.

Mushtaq is wanted in 21 cases in various police stations of the district.

On June 19, a team headed by Punhana SHO raided Badli village to nab Mushtaq, but he fired at the team. He fled with his brothers to Maharashtra. On the way, he “bought” a bride and got married and then went on ATM uprooting spree and robbed over a dozen ATMs.

When cornered, the police had recovered Rs 50 lakh from him, forcing him to flee. The Haryana Police nabbed his two brothers in June, but he fled with his wife. His wife returned home a few days ago.
