Rewari tops, Nuh last in institutional deliveries

Rewari district, once defamed for its dismal gender ratio, has topped the state in terms of institutional deliveries, with 98.9 per cent childbirths recorded in government and private healthcare institutes in the first quarter of the current year. The overall average of institutional deliveries in the state is 93 per cent.

Ambala stood second with 98.8 per cent institutional deliveries, followed by Panchkula (98.6 per cent) and Gurugram (98.4 per cent). Rohtak is at the fifth position with 98.2 per cent deliveries. It had registered 96.7 per cent institutional deliveries last year.

Though Nuh has improved its performance in comparison to last year, it still remains at the bottom with 69.3 per cent institutional deliveries. In 2018, the figure was 67.1 per cent. Palwal is the second last in the tally with 80.4 per cent such deliveries.

“In all, 1,57,080 births were recorded as the per Civil Registration System across the state up to April this year and of these, 1,46,031 deliveries took place in medical institutions. As many as 11,049 births were domiciliary. This amounts to 93 per cent institutional and 7 per cent non-institutional births,” said Krishan Kumar, Civil Surgeon, Rewari.

He said out of 5,274 deliveries recorded in Rewari, 2,161 (41 per cent) children were born in government hospitals and 3,057 (44.1 per cent) births took place in private hospitals. As many as 56 childbirths were non-institutional. The delivery at government hospitals rose to 7 per cent in Rewari, he said.

“Nuh witnessed 6,538 (51.6 per cent) childbirths in government and 2,240 (17.7 per cent) in private institutions, while 3,887 (30.7 percent) childbirths were non-institutional. In all, 5,016 (65.2 per cent) deliveries occurred in government institutions and 2,533 (32.9 per cent) in private,” said Kumar.

He said ASHA and anganwari workers were roped in to ensure delivery of every woman in institutions by making her aware of the advantages of such deliveries.

“Several campaigns carried out in the district to promote institutional deliveries have played a vital role in raising the percentage of institutional deliveries,” he said.
