Mandi, June 22

The health authorities here were put on alert after diarrhoea cases surfaced in the district. In Masyani village under the Sakaghat subdivision of the district, 53 cases of diarrhoea have so far been reported.

According to official sources, inadequate water supply was responsible as it forced villagers to use water from traditional water sources, which was contaminated.

Deputy Commissioner, Mandi, Sandeep Kadam visited the village yesterday and reviewed the situation. He directed the officials concerned to provide adequate water supply with proper chlorination.

Chief Medical Officer, Mandi, Des Raj Sharma said the cause of diarrhoea outbreak was intake of contaminated water from traditional sources. He said according to villagers, they were facing inadequate water supply for the last few days and used water from traditional ponds that were in the vicinity of the village for domestic use. The water was highly contaminated.

“However, the situation is under control and there is no need to panic. Today, four cases of diarrhoea were reported from the same village, but all patients were stable. We told people to use filtered and boiled water during rainy season to avoid any health hazard because of contaminated water,” he added.
