SHIMLA: A full court reference was held today in the High Court to welcome the new Chief Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy.

A full court reference was held today in the High Court to welcome the new Chief Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy.

Justice Narayana Swamy said he was feeling happy on assuming the charge in the “Devbhoomi” as honest, simple and god-fearing people resided here.

He said the judiciary played a vital role in imparting justice to people and safeguarding their rights, preserving the rule of law.

Keeping in mind the fact and also the pendency of cases in the high court as well as lower judiciary in the state, he said he would make all efforts to strengthen and streamline the judicial system. He further said he expected full co-operation from the Bar and employees, while discharging his duties.

Justice Dharam Chand Chaudhary congratulated and welcomed Justice Swamy on his first day in the court and said Justice Swamy had been impartial and fearless while delivering judgments and had a rich and varied experience as a Judge.

Advocate General Ashok Sharma, Chairman of the Bar Council of the state Ramakant Sharma, president of the High Court Bar Association NS Chandel and Assistant Solicitor General of India Rajesh Sharma also spoke. Justice Swami was sworn-in as Chief Justice of the High Court on October 6.

Born on July 1,1959, Justice Swamy was enrolled as an advocate in 1987 and practised in the High Court of Karnataka.

Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, Justice Sureshwar Thakur, Justice Vivek Singh Thakur, Justice Ajay Mohan Goel, Sandeep Sharma, Justice Chander Bhusan Barowalia, Justice Anoop Chitkara and Justice Jyotsna Rewal Dua were also present.

Former judges of the High Court were present. Members of the Bar Association, officers and officials of the High Court Registry were also present.
