Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College Hospital, Hamirpur, has failed to provide the transportation facility to its students.

According to the Medical Council of India guidelines, it is mandatory for all medical colleges to have own transport facilities for students and staff to ensure their security. However, the Hamirpur medical college had failed to buy even a single bus for students.

As many as 220 students are living in private hostels and PGs in and around the town. In the absence of any transport facility, they are forced to travel by local buses.

Sources said the college authorities had last year hired buses from the HRTC to provide the facility to the students. However, the authorities failed to clear the payment of the HRTC and a sum of Rs5 lakh was still pending.

College principal Anil Chauhan said they were yet to buy their own buses. Last year, the college had outsourced transportation to the HRTC. However, due to the pending bills, the HRTC had shown reluctance to continue the service this year. “We have urged the Health and Family Welfare Department for the purchase of buses,” said Chauhan.
