Poor sanitation in Nurpur

Rajiv Mahajan

Campaigns and awareness programmes launched by the Nurpur administration and the civic body under the Centre’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan have failed to serve the purpose, as residents continue to litter roads, streets and their surroundings.

Recently, the Municipal Council (MC) had kept a number of dustbins in the markets, streets and localities in the town. But habitual offenders still throw garbage in the open, giving a bad look to this urban locality.

Even vendors and shopkeepers litter roadsides or vacant public and private land by throwing garbage and waste material in the markets. It has become a daily habit of some residents of the town who do not care for sanitation. A visit to the local markets and some localities presents an ugly picture of insanitary conditions given rise to by the residents, especially in the morning hours. Habitual offenders seldom use the dustbins installed by the MC at different locations in the markets.

Despite the directions issued by the MC, some shopkeepers do not keep dustbins in their establishments. Instead of putting accumulated garbage in the MC’s tractor-trolley, which collects it in the morning, they prefer to throw garbage on the roadside or at public places.  There is a demand to take action against such offenders who have been creating public nuisance by throwing garbage in the open.
