3 mega projects to begin this month

JAMMU: Work on three mega projects worth over Rs 7,000 crore in the Jammu region will begin in February with the Centre promising immediate release of funds for them.

Work on three mega projects worth over Rs 7,000 crore in the Jammu region will begin in February with the Centre promising immediate release of funds for them.

The projects are Rs 5,850-crore Ujh multipurpose project, Rs 914.48-crore four-laning of the Jammu-Akhnoor road, and Rs 255.9-crore Chenani-Sudhmahadev section of the national highway.

This was disclosed during a high-level meeting chaired by Governor Satya Pal Malik held in New Delhi recently.

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, and Jitendra Singh, MoS in the Prime Minister’s Office, attended the meeting, which reviewed the progress of various ongoing projects of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Ministry of Water Resources in J&K.

“The meeting was informed that the Ujh multipurpose project has already been approved by the Central Empowered Committee and Ministry of Water Resources. The ministry was requested to get the PIB approval expeditiously so that the project could start this month,” an official spokesperson said.

Similarly, the meeting discussed the status of approvals on the Chenani-Sudhmahadev road and Jammu-Akhnoor road. It was mentioned that more than90 per cent of the land for both projects was handed overto National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. The corporation promised that work on the two roads would be taken up this month.

‘Central govt to review compensation rates’

The Centre has agreed to the request of the Governor of providing adequate compensation to farmers who have been affected by the Jammu ring road project. “Agreeing to the Governor’s request of providing adequate compensation to farmers, whose lands are being acquired for the project, Gadkari promised that compensation rates for the land acquired will be reviewed,” the spokesperson said.
