Hoshiarpur, August 23

The state government is committed to maintain law and order in the state and improve vigil by incorporating the latest technology for the purpose. The initiative has started in Hoshiarpur with the installation of ultramodern CCTV cameras at a cost of Rs 59 lakh. The tenders for the same were floated and the work has been assigned to a Chandigarh-based company. Soon, at 26 prime locations of the city 75 hi-tech CCTV cameras will be installed.

Local MLA and state Industries and Commerce Minister Sunder Sham Arora said this while addressing a press meet here this afternoon.

The minister said three control rooms would be set up at the Sadar police station, Hoshiarpur, Model Town and City Police Station. The installation of the CCTV cameras would enable the police to maintain law and order to ensure the safety of people.

DC Isha Kalia said the cameras would be having optical fibre-based networking to ensure hassle-free 24x7 vigil. Also, two-year ‘operate and maintain’ agreement had been signed with the company which would install the cameras.

SSP Gaurav Garg, while replying to a query, said dedicated response teams would be available at respective control rooms to tackle any untoward incident.

The minister also handed over cheques amounting to Rs 75 lakh to school heads of 45 institutions for installing rainwater harvesting systems and construction of toilets. The rainwater harvesting systems will be installed in 30 schools at a cost of Rs 60 lakh while new toilets would be constructed in 15 schools at a cost of Rs 15 lakh.

The minister inaugurated the first bus queue-cum-rain shelter on the Government College road and said 14 such shelters were being raised in the city. He added that whereas on one hand, people would benefit from these, on the other, these would add to the income of the Municipal Corporation, Hohiarpur.
