Prof Pandit Rao Darennavar, originally from Karnataka, has been teaching at a government college in Chandigarh and is propagating the importance of Punjabi language for long.

Darennavar, who speaks Punjabi, while talking to media at a press conference here today, said that he had written letters to music companies not to record songs which contain vulgarity as also the ones that glorify weapons and liquor.

He said he had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) against vulgarity in Punjabi. “Punjabis should realise that there is no place for vulgarity in their beautiful culture,” he added.

Having a board bearing the Punjabi alphabets and messages depicting Punjabi culture beside him, the professor said the language is so pious that the use of these words was wrong. “I will take legal action against the companies if they keep on doing the same,” he said.

He has been teaching Punjabi to the PGI doctors in Chandigarh who are from other states so that they could interact with patients from Punjab with ease.

Apart from this, the professor has specially hired five painters who, along with him, write, paint and install boards in Punjabi. He visits every district and by placing the boards over his head, he stands in the most crowded place so as to let them know the importance of the language.

He said, “I never ask the people anything, I just stand with the board and let it do the work. They must know that if I being from Karnataka can respect and worship the language, why can’t they?”
