Residents fume over poor sanitation on Chuggiti road

The Chuggiti road leading to GNDU Regional Campus and other residential colonies has been turned into a dump yard. The residents of the area say that it’s over two months now that the garbage from the Chuggiti chowk has not been lifted. They say the Municipal Corporation (MC) has failed to maintain proper sanitation in the area and is lending deaf ears to their pleas.

The rubbish on the road is not only an eyesore to the public but it also stinks, causing an inconvenience to residents of Sangam Vihar, Karol Bagh, Maan Singh Nagar, Himachal Colony, Preet Enclave and other localities. The residents allege that though the elected representatives have made numerous promises to shift the garbage dump, nothing concrete has been done in this regard.

Daljit Singh, a regular commuter of this road and resident of Sangam Vihar, said for the past many months no regular lifting of the garbage was conducted by the sanitation workers. Many times it has also been noticed that the MC workers dispose off their garbage-ridden trolleys on the empty plot lying adjacent to the road therefore the foul smell kept emanating from the garbage has made it difficult to cross the road.

Gobind Singh, another resident, said: “The condition is really deplorable. Stray animals keep making rounds of the heap time and again. The road is the main route to GNDU Regional Campus and Talhan road and also connects to national highway, but officials are not heeding to our pleas.”

The residents also alleged that as garbage has covered a considerable portion of the road, many rag pickers indulge in garbage burning and that the smoke emanating from it is injurious to the health of their children as well environment.

Another resident said: “The condition of the road speaks the sorry state of the Smart City, Jalandhar, and commuters passing through it usually cover their faces to save themselves from the dust and the foul smell,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chief Sanitary Inspector Soni Gill said, “The MC is taking care of cleanliness and collecting garbage from every corner of the city. If residents are facing sanitary problems, we will get it checked and ensure the cleaning of the area.”
