Surjit hockey tourney: Indian Navy beat PNB

JALANDHAR: Indian Navy reserve their berth in the league stage after beating Punjab National Bank( PNB), Delhi, 4-1 in the 36th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament being played at Surjit Hockey Stadium here this evening.

Indian Navy reserve their berth in the league stage after beating Punjab National Bank( PNB), Delhi, 4-1 in the 36th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament being played at Surjit Hockey Stadium here this evening. In Pool A league match, holders Army XI beat ONGC Delhi 3-0 to earn three points. In Pool B league match, Air India and Indian Railways played a 2-2 draw. Both teams earned one point each.

In the last knockout stage match, Indian Navy played a good hockey. Pawan Rajbhar of Navy scored a field goal in the 3rd minute and took a lead of 1-0. In the 15th minute of the game, Vishal Antil of the PNB converted a penalty corner into the goal and equalised the score at 1-1. After that Navy players did not give any chance to PNB team. For Navy, Jugraj Singh scored in the 19th minute, Palangappa in the 38th minute and Ajinka Jadhav in the 39th minute to complete the tally at 4-1.

In the Pool A league match, last year champions Army XI played controlled hockey. In the 33rd minute of the game, Army XI’s Siraj Alira converted a penalty corner into a goal and the team took a lead of 1-0. In the 45th minute of the play, Army’s Rahul Rathee scored a field goal and in the 52nd minute Budu Tuti converted a penalty corner into a goal. Army team won the match with a margin of 3-0.

In other Pool B league match, Air India Mumbai drew with Indian Railways 2-2. For Air India, Saurav Anand scored in the 15th minute and Joginder Singh in the 23rd minute. Railways team bounced back in the 33rd minute and reduced the margin with the help of Sheshe Gowda, who converted a penalty corner into a goal. In 58th minute, Railways equalised the goal(2-2) with the help of Pardeep Singh.
