1,000-kg substandard cheese seized

Under the mission Tandarust Punjab, a joint team of the Health Department and Diary Development department, under the leadership of District Health Officer Dr Seva Singh seized 1,000 kg substandard cheese.

In the preliminary investigation, the cheese appeared to be spurious, so the team sent the samples to the Kharar laboratory. Dr Sewa Singh said the team had received information that poor quality cheese from Gurdaspur area was being sent to Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Himachal Pradesh.

People sell adulterated and low-grade cheese at a price of Rs 200 per kg, which the shopkeepers further sell at the rate of Rs 300 per kg. Based on a tip off, the team of the Health Department had set up a check point at the Naushahra Pattan Road near Mukerian in the wee hours on Sunday, under the leadership of District Health Offficer (DHO) Dr Sewa Singh and Deputy Director Dairy Development, Davinder Singh.

The team sent the samples of cheese to the Kharar Laboratory. The team also collected and sent the samples of from various shops and milk products from Mukerian-Talwara Road.

The DHO warned the shopkeepers to strictly follow the norms of the Food Safety Standard Act while preparing food items.
