Some villages of Phagwara subdivision were seen badly-affected and submerged due to the release of extra water from Bhakhra Dam on Tuesday after three days of torrential rain in the region.

Thousands of acres of agricultural land in around dozen of the villages, including Nasirabad, Lakhpur, Panchhat, Brahmpur and Begumpur villages, in Phagwara subdivision were submerged as the Nasirabad Choe overflowed due to the heavy rain in the region.

Breaches developed in the overflowing Choe at about five places were plugged with hard efforts of the Drainage Department.

Swapandeep Kaur, Naib Tehsildar, Phagwara, visited the affected villages on Tuesday morning. The Road linking to Lakhpur and Malikpur villages was seen submerged and closed on Tuesday.

Later, Mandeep Singh, SP Phagwara and Sumit Mudh, SDM, Phagwara and ASP Sandeep Malik also visited the villages to assess the situation.

Naib Tehsildar Swapandeep told on Tuesday evening that 10 families, residing in a submerged street of Brahmpur village were evacuated and shifted to the Gurdwara of the village.

Deputy Commissioner Kapurthala Mohammad Tayab has ordered to set-up a round the clock “Flood Control Room” at SDM and Tehsil office, Phagwara. Any Citizen can contact the flood control room at Phone Nos 01824-260201,01824-260794 any time. He said evacuation centres had been set-up at Rihana-Jattan village, Panchhat, Sahni, Chiherru and Phagwara.

Naib Tehsildar Swapandeep told that roofs of around one dozen villagers were found collapsed or cracks had developed in the walls of their houses. SDM Mudh said special girdawari would be conducted soon at the affected places. Buildings of Govt Primary School and Veterinary Hospital were also seen submerged badly.
