142 cases of illicit liquor seized

Ludhiana, February 15

The city police today seized 142 cases of illicit liquor in separate cases.

The anti-narcotic cell of the city police recovered 95 cases of illicit liquor. The investigating officer, ASI Sansar Singh, said the police had received a tip-off that a car carrying a huge quantity of liquor had been parked at Country Home East. The police raided the place and recovered the bottles of ‘Naina’ brand whisky. The owner of the car is yet to be traced. “We are trying to know about the owner of the car with the help of Transport Department and he will be nabbed soon,” said the ASI.

In another case, the CIA wing of the city police nabbed a liquor smuggler and recovered 14 cases of liquor from his possession. He has been identified as Ram Kishan of Lalh Kalan village. The investigating officer, Head Constable Subegh Singh, said following secret information that a man was selling illicit liquor at Shandra Barota Chowk, the police conducted a raid and nabbed the suspect red-handed. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against him.

In yet another case, the Jamalpur police recovered 33 cases of liquor from Bhukhri village. However, the suspect escaped. The investigating officer, ASI Jagjit Singh, said during routine patrolling near Bhukhri Kalan village, a police party signalled a car to stop for checking. The driver, instead of paying heed to the police signal, sped away. The police chased the car and found it stuck in waste outside the village. Thirtythree cases of illicit liquor were recovered from the car. The police have identified the smugglers as Jaspreet Singh, Gurdeep Singh and Happy, all residents of Koom Kalan, and Ravi Kumar of Bhagwan Nagar. — TNS
