CPM opposes Modi govt’s ‘anti-people’ policies

The State Body of the CPI (M) has announced to launch a coordinated movement to protect secularism, democratic organisations and apex constitutional bodies from the hammer of the Union Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prevention of alleged ‘saforisation’ of education, privatisation of railways and dilution of labour laws were cited among other priorities of the leftist outfit.

Addressing a gathering of office-bearers of the party, state chief Sukhwinder Singh Sekhon alleged that the Union Government had been trying to protect the interests of top corporate houses, instead of looking after the fundamental rights of common people.

“Anti-people policies of the government have resulted in a situation wherein 74 per cent of the total wealth of the nation is with one per cent wealthy persons of the countries while a majority of 99 per cent population is trying to survive with 26 per cent of the wealth,” said Sekhon.

Sekhon lamented that the Centre had already started to paralyse all labour laws and at least 13 of them had already been diluted to varying degrees. “Efforts are being made to finish MGNREGA, which we wanted to be implemented in urban civic bodies too,” said Sekhon maintaining that the scheme has proven a boon for villagers and development of rural areas as well.

The CPI (M) leader apprehended that the Indian Railways would be privatised soon to benefit corporate house by donating network of rails and railway stations which had been established with the public money. The situation, besides resulting in hike of rail fares, will also deprive special categories of passengers to avail special concessions admissible at present.

Sekhon blamed the Punjab Government for losses and damages being suffered by the residents of flood-hit regions as according to him, the administration had failed to take preventive measures, funds for which were earmarked in every annual budget. The party demanded total compensation for losses suffered by the flood victims.
