Degradation of moral values has been identified as major factor behind failure of society to protect lives and dignity of girls and women, which has emerged as a major crisis.

The genesis of crime of all nature against children is due to absence of self-regulation and lack of integrity, morality or sense of responsibility among men of all age groups.

Women activists, associated with educational, social and religious organisations have launched a movement to inculcate moral values among male members of their families and clans, besides other organisations.

The drive was launched in response to call given by a group of anthropologists and social reformers led by Dr Shalina Mehta.

“Women social activists of the area have launched a coordinated movement to motivate male members of their respective families, clans and organisations to give due respect all girls and women they interact,” said Dr Jyoti Kapoor from the local unit of Rotary Club.

“Teaching own sons, brothers and other members of family to be a good human being is need of the hour as we can’t think of a three-year-old girl or an 80-year-old lady protecting herself,” she added.

“Organising seminars and camps on the issue is of no use till men at our own homes are not sensitised on the subject,” she argued.

The concept would be propagated through meetings with members of women educational institutes and ladies clubs, she added.

“Women followers of the sect have already started counselling male members of their respective families on the subject,” said Mala Karir, an office-bearer of the local unit of Shree Ram Sharnam Ashram.

“Before persuading other women of our organisation, I as a mother of two sons promised myself that I will teach them to respect women for their own wellbeing,” she added.

“I have already discussed the matter with my colleagues in the Municipal Council. President Suraaj Mohammad has assured that efforts in this direction will be enhanced by involving office-bearers and activists of other social organisations of the town,” said Sweety Kakria, former Municipal Council vice-president.

“Inculcating moral values in our wards, including boys and girls, should become a part of our lives. We all should spread more and more awareness about the issue,” said Dr Shalina Mehta while appreciating concern and response shown by activists.

“It is high time that we should teach our boys that women are not objects of lust or revenge. We should teach them humanity,” she added while maintaining that as a parent or kin of boy it was the most important yet easiest step one could take to safeguard girls and to protect humanity.
