Ludhiana, September 19

A 34-year-old inmate lodged at the local Central Jail allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the iron grill in the bathroom of his barracks this morning. He has been identified as Rahul.

He was arrested by the Moti Nagar police in March this year with drugs. Rahul’s wife has alleged that the police had implicated him in a false case due to which he was depressed. Whenever she visited the jail to meet her husband, he would curse the police for registering a false case of drugs against him, she said.

Around 6 am, he went to the bathroom where he tied a piece of cloth (‘parna’) to the grill and hanged himself.

The staff immediately took him to the jail hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem.

Jail officials said a judicial probe has been initiated into Rahul’s death.
