Ludhiana: Additional Sessions Judge Sonia Kinra has convicted Magnu (40), alias Rana, a resident of New Subhash Nagar, Basti Jodhewal, on the charge of raping an 11-yr-old girl.



Ludhiana: Additional Sessions Judge Sonia Kinra has convicted Magnu (40), alias Rana, a resident of New Subhash Nagar, Basti Jodhewal, on the charge of raping an 11-yr-old girl.  He was ordered to undergo rigorous life imprisonment. A fine of Rs 2.60 lakh was also imposed on him, out of which Rs 2.50 lakh would be paid to the victim as compensation. Apart from this, the court has asked the District Legal Services Authority Secretary CJM Dr Gurpreet Kaur to provide compensation to the victim under the Victim Compensation Scheme. A case was registered on the statement of victim’s father on May 26,2015, at Basti Jodhewal police station. The complainant said her daughter was studying in Class VI. On May 25, 2015, her daughter left her house around 11.30 am saying she was going to deliver some clothes at her friend’s house, but she did not come back. During investigation, the police traced the girl and arrested the accused. However, he pleaded innocence and false implication. But after appreciating the evidence on record, the court found him guilty. OC

Draw of lots for flats held 

The draw of lots for the under-construction flats for urban poor was held at the MC’s Zone-B office, here on Monday.  Ludhiana East MLA Sanjay Talwar was the chief guest. He said the Ludhiana MC was constructing 750 flats for the urban poor in Mundian. He said these flats would be given to the urban poor under the government’s project. He said 126 draws were taken out in the presence of Ludhiana MC Commissioner Kanwalpreet Kaur Brar and other senior MC officials on Monday. The MC Commissioner said the construction of the flats was going on in full swing. She said some of the successful beneficiaries of the draw of lots would be handed over the letters by the CM during the state-level Independence Day celebrations at Guru Nanak Stadium on August 15. Pensioners protest 

Several pensioners protested against the state government outside the Mini-Secretariat on Monday. They, along with other organisations, protested under the Apang Suang Lokmanch and sought implementation of the pension scheme which was part of the election manifesto of the Congress party. They said the pension amount of old-age pension, for handicapped, etc. should be increased to at least Rs 2,500 a month from Rs 700. They raised slogans against the government. TNS
