Disability is no deterrent when it comes to casting votes or even performing election duty. To encourage persons with disability, booth number 40 at Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Kitchlu Nagar, Ludhiana West constituency, was managed by persons with disabilities.

The entire staff deputed at the booth was differently abled. The presiding officer, assistant presiding officer, two polling officers, block level officer and the security guard at the booth were differently abled.

Hatinder Singh, after casting his vote at BVM School, Kitchlu Nagar, said the general perception among working people was to avoid performing election duty.

“I have seen many people trying to avoid election duty, but seeing specially abled doing it has really set a goal for everyone. Nobody should skip the duty and should always be at the front when it comes to performing duty for the country,” he said.

Specially abled Lakhvir Singh, who works at Punjab Agricultural University, said it was the first time that he had been assigned the election duty.

“It feels good to be a part of the system. I had a nice experience doing my duty,” he said.

Voters at this booth were given a red carpet welcome and were escorted by NSS volunteers.

All specially abled voters were given roses after they cast their vote and selfie corners were also there for clicking pictures.
