The Apang Suang Lokmanch (ASUL), Insaaf Prapti Manch and Lokmanch Punjab members staged a protest under the Jago Punjab Movement outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, on Friday.

Former MLA Tarsem Jodhan said they staged a protest to seek employment for youth, social security pensions, implementation of Act for physically challenged, provision of safe drinking water and for promotion of Punjabi.

He said the people were falling ill due to contaminated water supply in various parts of the state while no measures were taken to stop pollution in drains and rivers.

“The state government had promised to increase pension for widows, handicapped and elderly persons, but nothing has been done. The government must increase the pension of these people. The MGNREGA Act should be implemented in a right manner and the government should increase the daily wages of MGNREGA workers,” he said.

Balwinder Singh of ASUL said they would hold such protests daily till March 15. He said they would also create awareness about the issues in rural areas.

“The successive governments failed to deal with corruption, unemployment, polluted water and drug menace. Under the Movement, we aim to create awareness among people about their rights,” he said.
