A delegation led by SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal has been assured of justice in the 1984 Kanpur Sikh riot instances by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) setup for the purpose.

Longowal said the SIT had stated that the cases would be reopened and the witnesses’ statements would be recorded within a week.

Recent reports suggested that files pertaining to Kanpur riots cases were misplaced. Following this, the Sikh delegation, including Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, Balwinder Singh Bhundar and local Sikhs, visited SIT member Subhash Aggrawal and other officials concerned at Kanpur. They raised the issue of ensuring security to the victims’ kin and witnesses, besides expediting the investigation.

Longowal said even after 35 years, justice eluded the families. “The SIT assured us that the statements would be recorded in a week and every aspect would be probed thoroughly. I appeal to the victims and their families to come forward to submit their statements so that justice could be done,” he said.
