AAP protests govt inaction on stray animal menace

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took out a march outside Nehru Park here on Monday in protest against the civic authority’s inability to find a solution to the stray animal menace.

On November 25, AAP had launched an indefinite dharna here and its state leadership had threatened to pursue a legal case against the state government if it fails to find a solution to the problem of stray animals in the town.

Bhupinder Kaur and Sukhraj Singh, Malwa zone presidents of women and youth wings of the party, respectively, said the animals were causing numerous fatal accidents every day. The problem of stray cattle and dogs was worsening day by day, but the government was in a slumber and had not formed any policy for its solution.

Abohar AAP activists Raghubir and Ramesh said despite over a dozen deaths due to stray bulls this year, the administration had not taken any remedial measures.

The administration had, last week, called a meeting of non-government organisations and Block Development and Panchayat Department officials and decided to collect information about land available with gram panchayats to develop gaushalas but a report was still awaited.

Earlier too, some panchayats had expressed reluctance to give away such land, as it is their only source of income to carry out maintenance work.

The previous (SAD-BJP) government had, in 2016, announced a gaushala at the Haripura village but later Salemshah in Fazilka sub division was finalised for the project, which has not been completed so far.
