Muktsar, August 14

In a first, a Congress MLA has decided to wage a war against drugs at his own level. Gidderbaha MLA Amarinder Singh ‘Raja Warring’ and his wife Amrita Warring, who runs an NGO (Aasraa Foundation), have announced to hold plays on real life stories of drug addicts and their families in Gidderbaha Assembly segment from August 16.

Students of the theatre department of some universities will act in the plays, which are scheduled to be held at all government high schools and public places in villages and town in Gidderbaha constituency.

Talking to The Tribune today, Raja Warring said: “Our aim is to inform youth about the ill-effects of drugs on their life. We will hold the plays on our own without any government support and pay the theatre artistes from our pocket. Each play will last 30-35 minutes. A one-minute trailer has been prepared.”

He said: “Initially, the campaign will be launched in Gidderbaha but if people in Bathinda approach us, we will make arrangements there as well.”

A large number of people were recently caught with drugs in this Assembly constituency and that too by the anti-drugs committees formed by villagers.

Muktsar SSP Manjit Singh Dhesi appealed to the anti-drugs committee members to refrain from making videos of suspects and frisking anyone. “We are briefing them repeatedly how to act while nabbing addicts or peddlers. Sometimes, members don’t know about the law, so it is our duty to inform them. We are working as a team to curb drug menace,” he added.
