In what appears to be a case of honour killing, a 23-year-old youth of Khote village in Nihalsinghwala sub-division was allegedly poisoned to death by the family of a girl with whom he was reportedly having an affair, the police revealed here on Friday.

The victim, identified as Harwinder Singh, was working in a milk plant at Nihalsinghwala. The girl belongs to the adjoining Dhurkot Ransih village.

The deceased’s family members alleged that he went to meet his girlfriend at her house on Thursday and did not return. He was allegedly beaten up by the girl’s family members and forcibly made to swallow poison. He was later found lying on a link road in a serious condition. He was rushed to a local hospital where he died after some time.

A police team led by Nihalsinghwala SHO Jaswant Singh rushed to the spot and brought the body to the district hospital for a post-mortem examination. The youth’s family members, however, refused to give consent, demanding registration of a murder case against the parents and relatives of the girl.

Later backed by fellow villagers and activists of farm unions, the family staged a protest against the police. Budging under pressure, the police reportedly registered a case of murder against girl’s father Jarnail Singh, mother Surjit Kaur and some relatives on the complaint of deceased’s father Nirmal Singh.
