Activists of the BKU (Ekta-Sidhupura) on Wednesday staged a dharna outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner here to protest against the water scarcity in the tail-end villages.

BKU, Fazilka unit, district president Uday Singh Ghuriana, who led the protest, alleged that on one hand, the crops in some of the areas were inundated due to floods while on the other, most of the villages falling at the tail end of the eastern and Abohar division canals had been facing a drought-like situation due to water shortage.

Ghuriana rued that the farmers were forced to irrigate their fields using diesel gensets, increasing the input cost. He also alleged that the state government failed to clean the canals, causing loss of water.

Meanwhile, Executive Engineer, Canals, Pawan Kapoor said the flow of water had been increased from the upstream and the problem would be resolved.
