Notify authority for disabled, state told

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed Punjab and Haryana governments to notify an authority for examining the cases of disabled persons with “high-support” needs.

Chandigarh, May 1

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed Punjab and Haryana governments to notify an authority for examining the cases of disabled persons with “high-support” needs. The directions were also issued to notify an assessment board within six weeks so that two seriously “disabled” youngsters could be extended high support for their rehabilitation.

The direction by the Bench of Chief Justice Krishna Murari and Justice Arun Palli came while disposing of a petition filed in public interest by advocate Hari Chand Arora. He was seeking grant of regular financial assistance to the two youngsters — Punita of Guruharsahai and Vijay Dhamija of Ganour in Sonepat.

The two were virtually confined to bed and required regular financial assistance for their survival, but their parents were not having resources for their maintenance and regular treatment.

Arora moved an application seeking issuance of appropriate directions to Punjab and Haryana to direct the authority envisaged under Section 38 of The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 to put up their cases before the assessment board for examining the type of high support they require from the government. — TNS
