The residents, however, alleged the police authorities as well as fire brigade were late while the residents tried to douse the fire themselves by throwing water with the help of buckets.

Bittu, the husband of Indu, was in deep shock and was not able to speak.

His son Jaspreet told that his maternal aunts Vandana and Preeti had come from Delhi around two months back to perform sewa in the Golden Temple.

He said he was at work at a textile shop when he received the information about the incident from a friend.

“Initially he thought he was making a joke, but when he confirmed from his neighbour he was shocked,” said Jaspreet.

He added that his aunts were planning to return to Delhi next month.

Narinder Singh, a resident of the area, said the family has been residing in the house for the past many years.

Vandana and Preeti had arrived in November last year to pay obeisance and perform sewa in Darbar Sahib.

The whole family was very religious in nature and continuously used to pray and read religious books.

“Today suddenly we heard shouts from the house and people came out to see dense smoke coming out from the first floor of the house. The people gathered at the spot and informed the police and the fire brigade.

“They started throwing water from the buckets in order to douse the fire. Some people tried to break open the door but it was bolted from inside while the windows too were also bolted from inside,” he said.

After a lot of effort, the people managed to douse the fire after half-an-hour but they failed to save the three women.

Indu’s body was found in the balcony while Vandana and Preeti’s bodies were on the bed.

According to police, there was a strong smell of kerosene oil at the spot while a bottle of the same was also recovered outside the house.

Forensic teams have also reached the spot for investigations.
