Jeremy lifts second medal for India in Thailand event

New Delhi: Youth Olympics gold medallist Jeremy Lalrinnunga clinched a silver medal in the men’s 67kg category, fetching India’s second medal in the EGAT’s Cup International Weightlifting Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Youth Olympics gold medallist Jeremy Lalrinnunga clinched a silver medal in the men’s 67kg category, fetching India’s second medal in the EGAT’s Cup International Weightlifting Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The 16-year-old Lalrinnunga lifted 131kg in snatch and 157kg in clean and jerk for a total of 288kg. The promising Mizoram weightlifter was, however, far behind the gold winner, Deni of Indonesia who lifted 303kg (132+171). Ruben Katoatau of Kiribati took the bronze with a total lift of 285kg (125+160).

Vani, Aditi, Diksha miss cut in Handa Vic Open
A disastrous front nine ruined Vani Kapoor’s hopes of making the cut on her LPGA debut as she shot a below-par 3-over 75 in the second round of ISPA Handa Vic Open.  Vani had two double bogeys, two bogeys and three birdies, falling short of the cut mark by two shots. She totalled 146 and was tied 77th as the cut fell at 1-under 144.  Also missing the cut were Aditi Ashok (73-76), who was tied-109th, and Diksha Dagar (78-72), finishing at tied-124th.

Real Kashmir’s match postponed due to snow   
The thick snow cover at the TRC Ground in Srinagar on Friday forced the postponement of Sunday’s crucial I-League match between title contenders Real Kashmir FC and East Bengal. Real Kashmir and East Bengal were to clash in the match, where a lot is at stake for both the sides to remain in contention for the I-League title. However, the conditions led to the postponement of the match. “Due to bad weather and pitch condition in Srinagar, our next match vs Kashmir FC on February 10 has been called off. New date of the match will be announced later,” an East Bengal statement said.

India A women’s hockey team lose to France A side 
The India A women’s hockey team suffered a 0-1 defeat at the hands of France A in their first match here on Friday.  In a match that could have gone either way, France’s Ines Lardeurscored the winner in the 37th minute through a penalty corner. Both sides got sufficient opportunities to score but the defence on both sides stood firm, keeping the opposition forwards from converting the chances.

Kochi Blue Spikers beat Black Hawks Hyderabad 3-2 to notch up their hat-trick of wins for this season in the Pro Volleyball League. The Kochi side won 12-15 15-11 15-12 15-10 14-15. David Lee showed his class for Kochi as he scored 12 points. Ashwal Rai was the leading scorer for Hyderabad as he overshadowed his illustrious teammate Carson Clark by scoring 15 points.

Paralympics lift Russia’s doping suspension 
The International Paralympic Committee said it will reinstate Russia next month, lifting a suspension imposed more than two years ago over a doping scandal. The IPC will lift the ban by March 15, providing the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC) adhere to strict conditions. “In August 2016 the IPC suspended the RPC because it was necessary and proportionate to the situation we faced and essential to ensure clean sport,” IPC president Andrew Parsons said.

Ten killed in fire at Flamengo training centre
A fire swept through the training centre and lodgings of Rio de Janeiro soccer club Flamengo on Friday, killing 10 people, including members of the club’s youth side. At least three youths aged 14 and 15 were injured in the blaze. All three were taken to the hospital, one of them reportedly in a serious condition. Firefighters said they arrived at the Ninho do Urubu, a state-of-the-art training centre that was expanded and opened only two months ago, shortly after 5am to find the building engulfed in flames.

Body found in wreck identified as Sala’s

A body retrieved from the wreckage of a crashed plane in the English Channel has been formally identified as Cardiff City’s Argentina-born soccer player Emiliano Sala, British police said in a statement. The Argentine striker’s body was first spotted by rescuers with a remotely operated vehicle on Sunday close to where the plane went missing near the British island of Guernsey. It was recovered on Wednesday and brought to the Isle of Portland in southern England on board the Geo Ocean III offshore supply ship on Thursday for formal identification by coroners. — Agencies
