Mr. Yusaf Ali on Lord Hardinge.

IN another column will be found reproduce from India a review of Mr. Yusuf Ali's article in the Contemporary Review on Lord Hardinge's Viceroyalty. After referring to Lord Hardinge as the architect of imperial unity Mr. Yusuf Ali considers his Lordship's method of developing the Minto-Morley's scheme of reform, points out official autonomy is not the same as popular autonomy and adds a warning that in less sympathetic hands pronouncement may run counter to the Indian demand for a full autonomy like that enjoyed by the colonies. His remark on the Hindu-Mahomedan problem is of particular interest at this moment when existing differences are proposed to be perpetrated in one of the Provinces. Mr. Yusuf Ali is positively of opinion that no longer must Mussalmans be satisfied as Musalmans and Hindus as Hindus. That is another way of stating the accepted proposition of Sir Ali Iman that Mahomedans should increasingly cultivate territorial patriotism. We heartily welcome his contribution to an estimate of Lord Hardinges Viceroyalty.
