A CALCUTTA telegram states that Mr Surendranath Banerjea has agreed to accept the office of President of the National Liberal League which was recently founded by several moderate Indian politicians in Bengal.  For the reasons we have already stated in these columns we should be deeply sorry if this statement turned out to be correct. Mr Banerjea is pre-eminently one of those public men, whether in India or elsewhere, who are designed by Providence not to give to party what is meant for their country and humanity. For years he has resisted all influences towards disruption in public life, and we hope that in the evening of an impressive life, so filled with splendid achievement, Mr Banerjea will not deviate from the policy to which he has consistently adhered through good report and evil, every since the birth of what is called the new party.
