The Punjab Enquiry

IN a recent issue we stated that we had been hearing complaints that in some cases individual officials had taken up an unjustifiable attitude towards men engaged in the task of preparing the popular case in connection with the enquiry into the Punjab disturbances. One such complaint, made with necessary circumstantial details, will be found in a letter published on another page in this issue over the signature of Mr. Hyder Mehdi, a Vakil of the Allahabad High Court. Similar complaints have reached us from other sources. We have no doubt that in all such cases the police or other officers concerned have exceeded their instructions and now that the matter has formed the subject of notice in the public press the authorities will take all necessary steps to nip the evil in the bud. We need scarcely say that it would be nothing short of a scandal of the gravest magnitude if owing to mistaken or perverse use of authority in the part of police or other officials the task of preparing the non-official case before the enquiry committee were hampered in any way.
