INTERVIEWED by a representative of the Observer (London) Lady Randolf Churchill lately gave some very interesting facts and figures relating to the employment of women in munition work. "There are," she said, "nearly six million women employed in munition work and other industrial occupations in this country, and whilst a great deal has been done for their comfort, much more remains to be done. More than two thousand new centres for munitions are being organised, and at least another £25,000 is needed immediately to cope with the requirements of the daily increasing numbers of women who are being employed. The women in munition factories work in twelve-hour shifts, and in many of the districts in which they are employed the accommodation is quite inadequate. I know of single beds which have to be used by three women, and very often it happens that women have to walk long distances to their employment and get up at four o'clock in the morning in order to be there in time."
