The 8th annual sports and athletics meet of the Central University of Punjab which began on Wednesday concluded here on Thursday. The meet was organised under the Fit India Movement and was a part of the university’s 11th foundation day celebrations.

Vice-chancellor Prof RK Kohli was the chief guest at the opening ceremony. Prof VK Garg, Dean Students Welfare, and KPS Mundra, Registrar, were the chief guests at the closing ceremony.

The CUPB Sports Committee organised various sporting events, including 50m race, 100m race, 200m race, relay race, shot put, discus throw and long jump, during the meet, in which over 1,000 students from various departments participated. The inaugural ceremony was marked by hoisting of the university flag, torch lighting and a march past. Students presented a mass performance on the Fit India Movement. The committee also organised various fun games such as sack race, three-leg race and back race and indoor gaming events such as carom and chess for students, faculty and staff members.

At the valedictory ceremony, Prof Sanjeev Kumar announced the names of winners of various sporting events. Chief Guest Prof Garg and Mundra congratulated the athletes and gave away prizes to winners.

In track and field events (boys), Amar Shakti Kumar and Chidambramnath won gold medal in 100m and 800m race, respectively. Muhammad Ansari bagged the first position in both 200m and 400m race. In track and field (girls), Chayanika and Jyoti Chaubey won the first position in 100m and 200m race, respectively.

Sapna Thakur and Shruthy Jayans won gold medals in shot put and discus throw. Amar Shakti Kumar won the first position in long jump (boys). Minnya Roshni and Burdwan Sekhar won gold in chess competition in girls and boys category, respectively. Manisa Majhi and Shafique Ali stood on top in carom event for girls and boys, respectively.

As many as 368 medals were given during the prize distribution ceremony.
