The district police have busted a gang of looters with the arrest of six persons who had allegedly stolen cash from a liquor vend near the Bhagu road and also looted another person near the Truck Union’s office recently.

Talking to mediapersons, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jaspinder Singh, said, “We have arrested six members of a looters’ gang and recovered Rs 1 lakh from their possession at Model Town Phase-1 area. Two motorcycles have also been recovered from the accused.”

“Two members of the gang are still at large and we have launched a manhunt to nab them. The gang has been operating in the district for the past many days and was busted just before they were about to execute a big heist in the coming days,” he added.

The accused have been identified as Baljeet Singh, Sandeep Singh, Manpreet Singh, Jaspreet Singh and Navdeep Singh, all from Chandsar Basti in Bathinda. The sixth accused, Sandeep Singh, is from Bir Talab Basti.

The police officials said during interrogation, the members of the gang admitted that they had looted a liquor vend on the Bhagu road and stole cash from another person near the Truck Union’s office recently.

The police added that the gang members used sharp-edged weapons to carry out loots and had collected Rs 3.31 lakh, which they distributed among themselves.

The police have managed to recover Rs 1 lakh from them while they have spent rest of the stolen money.

The police are now trying to locate the whereabouts of the other two accused — Davinder Singh alias Happy and Honey Singh —who are absconding.
